Summer Boot Camp: Gateway to Enterprise IOT?

By Cynthia S. Artin
June 05, 2018

June is a beautiful month to be in Canada, and at the LoRa Alliance All Members Meeting and Open House, Senet (the LoRaWAN platform provider whose OSS/BSS expertise is being adopted by Network-as-a-Service companies to roll out low power radio access networks) and Laird (a leader in wireless technology) will be hosting a boot camp of the intellectual kind.

The goal?

To introduce the combination of the Laird Sentrius LoRaWAN gateway which now comes pre-loaded with the Senet LoRa Packet Forwarder software.

With “embedded” as the wave of the future, shipping gateways with native support for registration and operation makes the provisioning and management of devices to LoRa networks automated through the magic of software.

More and more companies are partnering to bring to market out-of-the-box integrations, focused on enterprises who are investing in connected solutions (IoT and IIoT) and would prefer to do so leveraging network operations automation. It’s not easy to have to put all the moving parts together; enterprise adoption has been slow, and the likely reason for that is concerns about security, control and risk mitigation given that cyber-attacks on networks have generally been using connected devices as the entry point.

The other challenge for enterprise? Scale and sustainability in technology and cost.

“We’re always trying to make it easier for customers to connect to the Senet network,” said Bruce Chatterley, CEO of Senet. “The more options we give customers, including different gateways that are pre-integrated, the more convenient it is for them to roll out applications. We’re seeing growth across many enterprise IoT applications, including asset tracking, industrial automation, smart city solutions and more. Laird continues to be a great partner for us, and we’re excited to co-sponsor the bootcamp this week.”

The 8-channel Sentrius™ gateway supports LoRaWAN, dual-band Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet for multi-protocol flexibility, which expands the number of smart devices that can be connected to enterprise applications, and according to the companies’ announcement “delivers a highly optimized and economical approach to meeting the diversity of real-world IoT use cases.”

“Senet’s approach to IoT network deployment and operation brings unique value to companies like Laird by creating new customer engagement and gateway deployment models that are accelerating the adoption of low power, wide area connectivity,” stated Jonathan Kaye, Senior Director, Product Management at Laird. “We are excited to be collaborating with Senet to combine the utility of the Sentrius gateway with the ease of use and flexibility of the Senet network for our customers.”

Laird and Senet are both members of the LoRa Alliance and will be participating at the 10th LoRa Alliance All Members Meeting and Open House in Vancouver, Canada from June 4-7, 2018. The companies will be hosting a LoRaWAN boot camp session on Thursday, June 7. In this hands-on session, attendees will walk through using both BLE and LoRaWAN to bridge sensor data (temperature, wind speed and direction) via Laird’s RG1xx Gateway platform to Senet’s Network-as-a-Service.

In addition to advanced deployment tools, including intuitive web-based configuration and integration with Senet’s Packet Forwarder, the Sentrius RG1xx offers:

  • Full Linux operating system -- Kernel v4.x running on Atmel A5 Core @ 536 MHz
  • Multiple interfaces such as LoRaWAN, 802.11a/b/g/n and Ethernet
  • 8-Channel LoRaWAN support with up to +27dBM max transmit power
  • Comprehensive Certifications for FCC / IC / CE (all pending)
  • Industrial temperature range (-30? to 70? C)
  • Enterprise-grade security built on Laird's years of experience in wireless
